| Tuesday was the last day of the preliminary round matches. USA and Finland won their matches and both won also they preliminary group. Host team Finland had a very tough game against Sweden. Sweden had better goal difference before the game which ment that a tie against Finland would have raised Sweden to a top position in the group.
Although Finland won the group by winning Sweden 8-6 (3-2, 1-3, 2-0, 2-1). The game was a rough one and there were totally 30 penalties, 16 against Sweden and 14 against Finland.
In the beginning of the match Sweden skated better and had more scoring chances. Anyhow Finland won the first set 3-2 though the goalies saves was Finland eight and Sweden only one save.
The game was very exiting, but in the last period Sweden didn´t have the same tempo in the game than in the beginning. Finland used the whole material of the team and it was one important thing which mattered.
In the beginning of the fourth period Finland was leading by 6-5. Richard Wallin scored the 6-6 goal only less than four minutes left the game and raised again the hope in Swedish team.
Less than a minute later Aki Tuominen made the game winning goal. The final numbers were 8-6. The last goal was made by Mikko Liukkonen who got an excellent pass from Timo Nurmberg.
USA had an easier game
USA played only as much as they needed to win Germany. The first period was goalless, but USA made two goals in the second and that was enough for Germany. Germany didn´t get closer than one goal difference any more.
Patrick Reimer´s goal to 2-1 in the beginning of the third period raised the hopes for Germany, but in the late minutes of the period USA scored once.
In the fourth period USA run to a 6-2 victory.
Ales Hemsky was flying
Czech Republic got Ales Hemsky at last into their team. And there were no question about his talent. Last spring´s World Champion in ice-hockey made four goals and gave eight assists in his debute game in this tournament.
Czechs won the game against Austria 22-3.
Brasilia and Hungary won
their groups in B-pool
Brasilia and Hungary will be the two nations from B-pool on wednesday´s qualification round. Brasil won Japan in a tight match 4-3 and even closer was the match between Great Britain and Hungary. The final result was 8-8 which ment that Hungary will be playing against Slovenia in the qualification round on wednesday. Brasil will meet Austria.
