15.07.2005 [15:18] Finland went to semifinals after penalty shots
Finland was the big favour in the game against Slovenia in the quarterfinals. Maybe the attitude was too convenient in the host teams locker room because Finlandīs game was quite poor from the beginning.
Slovenia made four goals in the first period and Finland didnīt lead the game never before the penalty shots.
In the second period Finland made three goals and in the third Finland succeeded to tie the game. But that was a short fun. Only 27 seconds after Finlandīs 4-4 goal Slovenia went to 5-4 lead. And before the end of the third period Slovenia was leading once again by two goals.
In the fourth period Slovenia only freezed the game. It was very near to made a perfect result, but in the second half of the last period Finland scored twice by Jonne Vaahtera and Mikko Liukkonen. That was enough to get to penalty shots, becaus both teams didnīt score in overtime.
There was no need for the five penalty shots by each team, because Sloveniaīs four first players didnīt score. It was enough that Finlandīs Karo Koivunen and Mikko Liukkonen scored though Timo Nurmberg didnīt.
Finland went to semifinals against Czech Republic. The other semifinal is between USA and Sweden.
